Response to Refugee Articles
In the first article by Claire Felter, we begin by it going on mentioning how the United States has long been a country that accepts individuals from foreign countries that are trying to escape war, or prosecution. However, recently in the year 2017 President Trumps put a halt on the refugee policy that the U.S has had for so long in fear that these people entering the U.S are terrorists, or a threat to the country. It goes on by mentioning how the policy has been around since the second world war, and how different presidents from that moment on have made changes in the policy in which they both increase, and also decrease the amount of refugees that are able to enter the country. Many contributing factors such as the 9/11 attacks also had a shift in where there was a high concern that the policy be suspended for some time. We also get a look of where these people come from, how they are approved, and also the agencies that are the ones involved in resettling them.
In the second article by Richard Gonzales, we see that he states what executive orders President Trump has done in his first week in office, and how he plans to do way more. He plans to create some safe zones in Syria to maybe halt the amount of people fleeing their country, and coming into the U.S. We are also able to see how former President Obama had planned to allow over 100,000 refugees into the country, but President Trump actually intends to lower that number to only 50,000. The process that refugees would take in order to be accepted into the country has no also been changed where they must wait months, or maybe even years for them to complete in order to truly be able to enter the United States.
