In the news article, "Forget the Lawsuits- thousands of refugees already face a locked door" by David A. Adelman, he mentions the panics that people are having over the travel ban of the seven countries. These countries include Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia. President Donald Trump has lowered the annual global refugee quota to 50,000. When president Obama was in the office it was 85,000 to 110,000. This quota still remains until September of 2017. However, by the time this ban was issued, by early February already 30,000 refugees had been accepted into the country. Which means that there is only room for 20,000 more refugees into the country until September 2017 when the deadline of allowing refugees in is closed. Which is why the people are panicking because then they'll have to wait for the future years to come to be accepted into the country. For this pace of only 50,000, as of today only 2,500 can be accepted each month before the new quota limit is reached. President trump should really reconsidered what this travel ban will cause in the long run. In the article it says, "A yearly cap of 50,000 is scarcely calculated to accommodate either America's needs for foreign talent and expertise or the most basic humanitarian goals of the nation's democratic system." Which means that the 50,000 quota number are barely estimated to assist the U.S needs for foreign knowledge or the most essential plans of the nation's methods. Which is why the president should reconsider his actions and reach out to congress and the majority of the people for their opinions. In another recent article, "Refugees cross to Canada to escape Donald Trump", by Dorian Geiger, he mentions how many refugees didn't feel safe because of the immigration ban since most of them would be deported back to their countries where some claim to be killed if they go back. Their best chance is crossing the border over to Canada where the border between Canada and U.S is the longest undefended border in the world. Plus Canada has this non-profit organization for refuges called, the Manitoba Interfaith Immigration Council which provides, food, shelter, medical attention, and helps refugees file their asylum claims. The average number of refugees that Canada would normally see is 50 to 60 a year, but now those numbers have spiked to 118 from October to the end of January. Overall, people are getting very anxious about this whole immigration ban which is causing a lot of fleeing to a new country to start a new life.

Good summaries, Marlene. I like the idea of recognizing that we may have to sacrifice as a country if we don't meet our needs through the right amount of new immigrants. I think that point is too often forgotten. The second article reminds me again of unintended consequences. Politicians make promises and deliver quickly without much thought for unintended consequences.
ReplyDeleteI like how you provided all of the statistics at the beginning about the limit of immigrants that use to come in and what Trump has made it now. I agree with you that the country needs immigrants in order to continue to improve. It was also surprising to find out that only 2,500 refugees can enter the country each month until the maximum of refugees have entered for the year. I also could not believe how much lower the amount of refugees Canada gets per year compared to the U.S. Overall you used great facts and information.
