In "Are Refugees Dangerous" by Tanvi Misra the issue that is being discussed is whether refugees have a relation with the increase of crime in America. The logical fallacy that Misra uses is "Not a Cause for a Cause". She states that in the ten largest cities that took in refugees the crime went down. So if refugees come into the United States crime will go down. She concludes that United States might be making itself more dangerous and crime might rise for the lack of refugees coming in. Mirsa reasons for supporting this conclusion are her charts that show that in the most populated cities with refugees crime has gone down in nine of our ten of them. Also Mirsa pulls some statistics saying that the FBI has arrested 4 refugees for terrorist threats in the past couple years and only two were from the seven countries that Trump has banned. Mirsa also supports her reasoning with a counter argument saying the ban was put on to stop shooting like in Orlando or San Bernadino however those shooters were not refugees. Given all the factors above I believe that Mirza has presented a strong argument with reasonable conclusions.
David Krayden the author of "Illegal Refugees Now Streaming Across Quebec-New York Border" discusses the issue of refugees that have arrived in the united states are using the Quebec-New York border. He uses the logical fallacy "Hasty Generalization". He states that the media has generalized that most refugees have been going to Canada by Manitoba crossing. His conclusion is that this border is growing to be a great for refugees to get out of the United states. His reasoning for this is because New York and Washington DC airports are not to far from this border and they are international airports. He also supports this conclusion because of the 230 percent increase of refugees using this border compared to last year. Given the following I do not believe this was a strong argument.
It was an interesting argument that cities that have taken in refugees have actually decreased in crime rates. These statistics really put a damper on Trump's argument that he is keeping out dangerous criminals.

ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting point that refugees will bring down the crime rate in the United States. Refugees using the Que-bec- Ney York border with an increase of 230 percent from last year seems like a valid point to make about these refugees using this border.
