Refugee Article Summaries by Bianca Martiez

For the assignment I read two articles that pertained to the growing negative feelings that are being projected towards refugees from mainly Muslim countries. In the following I will summarize these articles as they both pertain to the refugee ban in different ways.      

The first article I came across was Susan Cambell:" Refugees, Advocates Face Uncertain Times". This article focused on the recent Immigration ban that came from none other than President Trump. The ban halted refugees from coming in from 7 different Muslim countries; a list which excluded places that actually had terror groups in them. This refugee ban left many in limbo as they couldn't return to the United States after having traveled out to their native countries. The ban kept families apart and unable to travel. This ban is seen more as morally wrong as well as the U.S. court system blocked it twice. The article goes on to explain how there are some refugees that come here and become a part of society.  It talked about how a specific family had dreams and goals now that they were here and safe in the United States and that many other refugees had the same wish; to live a stable life.

The following article that I read was was titled, "Created an Airbnb for refugees is more complicated than it sounds", by Amar Toor. This article dove into the Airbnb, which is an organization that specializes in housing refugees with those that offer their homes. The project includes background checks that match potential refugees with potential hosts in order to house these displaced people. The article talks about how as much as people want to help, anti-refugee sentiment has grown and it has become harder to place people in safe locations. In addition, the article focuses on other organizations that have similar goals to Aribnb, which is to house refugees. These types of organizations help assimilate these refugees into different societies where they could be safe and more successful. The whole point of these organizations is to reintegrate these people into a safer society.
