Uncivil Discourse
Uncivil discourse has been a controversy for a while. It can be identified as hate speech. I think uncivil discourse should be censored. Our system is wrong if it allows the KKK to hold birthday parties for Hitler in Jewish neighborhoods. This is disrespectful to those who have first handedly witnessed the Holocaust and makes it seem as if the genocide is considered a joke. Speech that generates hate and targets a specific group of people should not be tolerated.
The First Amendment protects everyone's right for freedom of speech. Insulting comments regarding one's religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity is allowed as long as it does not incorporate threats or evoke violence. Since Trump has been president, there have been several instances in the news that show that people think it is okay to openly be racist and practice uncivil discourse. This is morally wrong because why would one say something rude to someone else when they are not causing harm to anyone?
On March 6, 2017 CNN did a news report on hate speech regarding the Sikh community. It was reported that a man came up to a Sikh gentlemen's driveway and told him to "Go back to his country." This is something that is quite frequently heard for those who are non white and it hurts when people stereotype you as an immigrant because you are someone of color. Technically, this is a uncivil discourse and is protected right under the First Amendment of the Constitution. However, then the man pulled out a gun during the conversation and shot the Sikh. This is considered a hate crime and is not protected under the Constitution because it involved violence. Now the question is, did the uncivil discourse evoke the hate crime? Uncivil discourse is harmful because it can cause people to act irrational and think that it is okay to say anything without having a filter. This is rude and shows that hate speech can fuel hate related crimes, which is why uncivil discourse should be censored. People should not have to worry about being bullied and be told to deal with it. Furthermore, society should teach bullies not to attack individuals both verbally and physically.
