Uncivil Discourse

Uncivil discourse can be considered a form for people to use certain rhetoric to further one's own argument and message. It usually involves actions that are considered provocative, obscene, yet at times thought provoking. Most times I believe when certain rhetoric is called out by the media as 'uncivil discourse,' they are right, however, I also believe the conversation can be taken out of context. In such, I do believe uncivil discourse is harmful to an affluent and society that needs to work together, however, not all provocative statement made by someone on topics such as social, and political movements should be considered a form of 'uncivil discourse.'

In an article by Staci Matlock of The Tao News, A fresh perspective: 'Where has common decency gone?' individuals are discussing how Governor Martinez's speech involved forms of inflammatory rhetoric. It was considered that instead of her talking about ways to improve the state of New Mexico, she used 'slurs' such as 'liar' and 'disgrace.' The governors entire speech was rendered as 'uncivil discourse.' But why is it that one decides to use a few particular words that are ultimately used by everyone, everyday to communicate with one another deemed as evil or obscene. Ultimately, the community in which the speech was presented to did not even give her an opportunity to view the message behind the speech. Therefore, it is essential to understand the rhetoric used by individuals and the meaning behind it so it is not taken out of context and considered as uncivil discourse. I believe free speech should allow us to be thought provoking, and even provocative and it provokes a good debate, however, it should be done in good taste.
