Uncivil Discourse
Uncivil discourse is very harmful, and the ramifications of uncivil discourse can be detrimental. Even though racism has never truly died, open racism was frowned upon for a brief time. Unfortunately, since our celebrity president announced the basis he was running his campaign on hate crimes have been rising at an alarming rate. I do believe in freedom of speech, and what it is meant to represent. However, I do not agree with anyone who spews ignorance and fear as a tactic to control. If we live in a country that holds civilians, including professors accountable for what they say then why not do the same for our government. I understand that the media loves situations like these, and they eat it up. Still, the media cannot make up everything that comes out of the current president's mouth, or his crew. I say "crew" because the way government is acting is no different than a street gang. Their thug like tactics resulting in hate crimes and fear. Using force to target certain groups, and dividing a nation that's claim to fame is "United We Stand".
In the article "Workplace Political Tensions Persist in Trump's First 100 Days", written by Genevieve Douglas addresses the inevitable tension that is rising in the workplace do to political differences. There is an excessive amount of hyper-vigilance, in return employees are less productive due to discomfort. The Equal Employment Opportunity program recommends in house training, and counseling available for employees who are being victimized by acts of bigotry. There is a focus on being careful what is being said at the workplace. This brings up the same question, if limiting and censoring content is violating the right of freedom to speak.
