Uncivil Discourse
Uncivil discourse is viewed as "hate" speech. It's presented in that way, because it has led to many violent events in America. Discourse alone signifies a formal, intellectual discussion in speech whereas uncivil means impolite. This has been a huge social issue lately, due to Trump winning the presidential elections along with other events. For instance, prior to winning the elections, Trump repeatedly made harsh remarks towards immigrants and Muslims. Because of his winning, those racial groups have been living in fear ever since and more violent events such as racist outbursts have been occurring. Demonstrating that uncivil discourse is extremely harmful to society.
Uncivil discourse has been around for years, except it has been more common now with the use of social media. Social media permits individuals to post anything they want and in return, opinions about politics and so forth comes into play. People take advantage of free speech and are more likely to copy and paste stuff like Trump's face on Hitler's body if they wanted to. Except, people have taken uncivil discourse to a whole new level. There's been some cases where people post threats or violent remarks on social media. If this continues, the government should place some limits on freedom of speech.
In the article, "Racist Outbursts in U.S. in Wake of Trump's Election" Alan Neuhauser discusses about several racists incidents that have occurred since Trump won the election. One of the stories shared happened at Southern Lehigh High School in Pennsylvania, where students called black students horrible names like "cotton pickers" and expressed their support for Hitler, referring to Donald Trump. Another story shared was an image posted on Twitter of a white board where a student wrote, "Bye Bye Latinos Hasta La Vista." The author concludes the article with a quote made by president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Wade Henderson, "This election may be the most consequential in U.S. history." It seems as though the new president has unleashed a side of America that was never completely gone, but hidden.
