Uncivil Discourse

There are some people in this world who say hatful things and get away with it easily. Simply calling people some hateful names is one thing, but threatening their lives is far worse and this leads to violence. Words are just as powerful as actions. I believe that someone's words who are threatening to others should be detained and punished for it. They should at least be investigated to find out if they actually meant what they said. Someone people say things and don't actually mean them, but most of the time they do. I think there are many causes of these hate speeches. I think the most important cause of this, is the media. Media is the main cause of these hate speeches because a lot of the news articles appear on there and most of them are false and make people think otherwise. This causes people to express how they feel about certain situations on the news, which leads to people threatening others and causing hate speeches. I feel that a person should never put their political opinions online anywhere because there is always going to be someone who has different views from you. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions of topics. However, I think that there should be certain limits or guidelines as to what they are allowed to say on the internet. Especially because the government is always watching and can easily charge you if you happen to threaten or harm anyone's life.                                                                                                              In the article "Civility and Public Discourse", by Ean Maloney on April 28, 2017, he talks about a letter written to the editor in response to a previously published opinion piece. In that letter, there was a statement that really stood out. This statement said, "It will always be a painful truth that there are people out there like you, [Ms./Mr. so and so], who oppose the right to [such and such].". In this statement, Ean points out that this could also mean, "The earth would be a better place if you were not a living inhabitant". Words have an infinite way of creating different kinds of meanings.
