First, we must analyze the meaning of uncivil discourse. Discourse basically means communication by words or text, so uncivil discourse would be communication by words or text that is offensive, mean, disrespectful, unjust, or obviously: uncivil. I definitely believe that Uncivil Discourse is especially now that everyone has become so sensitive and opinionated. Additionally, cyber bullying has become a common trend on social media so when someone says something controversial they tend to be attacked. Uncivil Discourse is harmful because it can be a breeding ground for cyber bullying which in some cases has led to sucicide. In less extreme forms, uncivil discourse is harmful because it is spreading negativity and outrage not only amongst citizens but also politicians. When politicians say something out of line it makes people angry because they are supposed to be leading our country in the right direction.
An example of uncivil discourse that has happened is when Donald Trump made crude and sexual comments about women during the presidential race. This happened on several occasions. One instance was when he said he would grab a woman "right in the pussy", which was said in private but happened to be caught on tape by the media. Another instance is when he implied that a female reporter that was interviewing him was on her period because she was asking him difficult questions and disagreeing with him. This is offensive and inappropriate for a leading figure in our nation because it effects a massive amount of people and sets a terrible example for people. It also touches on women's rights to be equal and not looked down on by men. This is a perfect example of uncivil discourse.
Now, what can be done to stop this? Freedom of speech is important but I believe it should be regulated. Harsh language, threats, and verbal abuse shouldn't be tolerated by any social media platform. They should have a system that prevents people from posting statements with certain words involved to eliminate the uncivil discourse. Yes, this is taking away some freedom of our speech but in the long run it will save a lot of people from cyber bullying and negativity.
